Twenty

As the first wave of rats surged towards us, I caught a glimpse of something in the trees beyond the bog. A hunched figure, barely visible in the gloom, seemed to be directing the swarm with gnarled, outstretched hands. A witch, I realized with a jolt of fear. We weren't just fighting animals anymore.

At least now I had a good idea of what or who had been watching us.

The rats hit us with a fury of fur and teeth. I swung one ax and a torch in wide arcs, the flames from my torch leaving trails of light in the darkness. To my surprise, the rats nearest the fire recoiled, squealing in fear.

"They're afraid of the fire!" I called out.

Beside me, Sharna had sheathed her sword and was wielding her torch two-handed. With each swing, she sent rats flying, their bodies smoking where the flames had touched them. "Take that, you overgrown rodents!" she snarled, a fierce grin on her face.

Lily was swinging her torch at any rat that got too close. "Stay back!" she cried, her voice shrill.

And Elysia... Elysia was a revelation. The dark elf moved like smoke, her eyes flashing in the torchlight as she danced between the rats. She moved so quickly that she seemed to create a circle of fire around her that the rats were reluctant to breach.

"Your left, Kuno!" she called out, and I instinctively ducked, feeling the wind of her dagger as it sailed over my head and into a rat that had been about to leap on me.

We fought as one, covering each other's blind spots, calling out warnings and encouragement. It was as if all the tension and misunderstandings of the past few days had melted away in the heat of battle.

As we battled on, I kept catching glimpses of the bog witch through the chaos. She seemed to be growing more agitated, her movements becoming more frantic as we continued to hold our ground.

Finally, as the last of the rats fell, twitching and smoking at our feet, the witch herself emerged from the treeline. She was a nightmarish figure, her body a twisted mass of mud and roots, her hair a tangled mess of swamp weeds. Her eyes glowed with the same sickly green light as the rats, and her mouth was stretched in a rictus grin.

"Well, well," she cackled, her voice like dead leaves rustling in the wind. "You've proven more resilient than I expected. But let's see how you handle this!"

She raised her gnarled hands, and suddenly the air was filled with flying globs of swamp muck. I ducked and weaved, trying to avoid the foul-smelling projectiles, but one caught me square in the chest, knocking the wind out of me.

"Spread out!" I gasped, struggling to regain my breath. "Don't let her hit all of us at once!"

As we scattered, the witch's grin widened. She thrust her hands into the boggy ground, and suddenly thorny vines erupted from the earth, whipping through the air towards us.

I hacked at the vines with my ax, wincing as thorns tore at my arms and legs.
